Kate Ramsay & HyunJin Yun Knitted Luminaires
Knitted Luminaires will employ new knitting and lighting technologies to create glowing sculptural luminaires.
Informed by the holistic critical framework Cradle to Cradle in manufacture and material choices, the large knitted luminaires will be lit by Electro-luminescent wires. The pieces will be suspended from at least three metres above the ground. Knitted Luminaires will explore aspects of the synergy between three dimensional wool patterns with suspended light solutions: patterns of light and shadow; colour of light and wool; and three dimensional suspended wool structures in play with frames and projected light.
Kate Ramsay
Kate Ramsay completed a Bachelor of Architectural Studies in 2010, and in search of greater creative freedom, has since embarked on a Bachelor of Art and Design (Product Design Honours) at AUT. Currently inspired by organic forms, textile design techniques and tensile structures, Kate sees design as a practical application for her creativity. This year, she will design a lighting range as part of her studies.
HyunJin Yun
HyunJin Yun is currently making highly structured and sculptural multi-textured wool volumes by developing three dimensional weaving methods with the Shima Seiki automated knit machine. Her fabric productions have applicability from fashion to art; from seamless garments to illuminated sculptures.
Building on her knowledge as a buyer of fine Chinese silk, HyunJin has since studied the qualities of many different fabrics, their manufacturing methods and printing techniques. HyunJin is especially interested in developing traditional fabrics like silk and wool into new and innovative forms, with the potential to be used in modern garments, interior decorating and product design.
