Julia Oram Sky Wand
Sky Wand is a 6 metre vertical wand that draws the viewers’ attention to the sky as it flickers and sparkles with light from the inside out.
The wand will emanate light from halo-like cut out shapes, alluding to the mystery and magic of the heavens, while questioning how we can possibly imagine or represent the much debated “hole” in the ozone layer, which could lie above us, or even close by. Not only does the wand’s verticality reference the Sky Tower on the city’s horizon, it will prompt the valley strolling audience to lift their heads. On a clear starry night the wand will sparkle with the stars, and on a cloudy night it will help us recall what is concealed behind the cloud cover.
Julia Oram
Julia Oram was one of Art in the Dark’s founding artists, and her installation, Sky Mirror (2010), became a gathering point for visitors to the park as it brought the night sky down to earth.
A lecturer and multi-media artist, Julia works with a range of strategies to produce work that straddles both the visual arts and areas of design. Her current work explores notions of ozone depletion and ways in which related concepts can be expressed through media and forms in an art context. Recent projects include product design for Products and Services II (2008), curated by Catherine David, and Icycle (2010), for Brick Bay Sculpture Park.
